I hope you guys aren't too hard on yourselves and internalize a tough puppy-rearing experience as an F in parenting. Sure, "everybody" has them, but dogs can be really hard work - especially certain breeds. (I lived with my inlaws and their 120 pound mastiff puppy-at-heart for a while. He was a real PROJECT.) Sounds like a very sensitive, anxious little doggie, but things are on the upswing for sure. Snuggles for Penny.

Have you read the Hyperbole And A Half entries about her dogs? :)

I have to say that I like the monsters being off. Because it's not that they're totally off, you can see find monsters if you come across a Dungeon with a creep spawner. I've battled many-o-cavespider while underground even after the change.

It just makes BUILDING better because you can not worry about it being night, or an exploding creep demolishing part of your creation. ;)

I think it's hard not to follow society/your tribe/"the herd". For me, at least. I look to my group of friends for validation, and it's just very difficult to accept an alternate "life path," whatever that may be, and not think I went awry somehow. There are certain time limits on some things (like kids) where putting it off until later only practically works for so long.

Meaner spirited people have accused me of not "growing up", but in some ways it seems that their accusations are more accurately described as now following their same life path. Judging my "grown up-ness" against their own life.

Besides, haters gonna hate.

Doesn't wordpress let you login with openid? Can you add openid logins to your wordpress friends? If that's the case, no new accounts for people makes it easier. IMO, people who actually care on more than a casual level would be willing to make the account just to be able to participate in the discussion of your inner htoughts.

Ok, I wrote a long comment about this issue, but then I realized it just sounded whiny. Here's a brief summary.

I miss LJ. I miss feeling connected to people who cared about my daily life. I miss feeling that no matter the distance, friendships could survive.

It's not that I think people don't care all of the sudden; rather, everyone is just too busy to stay connected with people only through digital media.

One reason I left LJ was just to get all of that content unassociated with them. Now that it's all in a Wordpress blog, which I host, I feel a little more in control of my own content. There is no "friends-only" option unless I enable everyone to make Wordpress accounts, and then they actually _do that_, which doesn't seem likely, so I just try to keep the topic less personal. That definitely hampers my expressiveness, which makes the blog less interesting IMO.

There is no “friends-only” option unless I enable everyone to make WordPress accounts, and then they actually _do that_, which doesn’t seem likely, so I just try to keep the topic less personal. That definitely hampers my expressiveness, which makes the blog less interesting IMO.

I still post to LJ, if anything, because I want a private forum to express my thoughts. The idea of my employer/a customer finding my PERSONAL online blog horrifies me.

I also miss the community, and actually still check my LJ friends page a couple times a day (if anything, out of habit).

I agree that the LJ community was special. Like you've mentioned before, the signal to noise ratio was much better than FB/LJ

Sometimes, the noise drowns out the signal.

The thing about the dungeon finder is that you could do one in relatively quickly (you can teleport in and out of the instance to wherever you were previously questing) and if you don't have the time or energy to finish you could just drop group. It's polite to give warning before doing such, but on the other hand, since the groups are cross-realm, the likelihood you will get grouped with the same people again is slim. It's nice to play nice and your experience will be pleasanter because of it, but if you're grouped with a douchecanoe, at least the unpleasantness can easily be forgotten.

WoW runs OK enough on my mbpro, but Ben has a huge monitor with a top-of-the-line graphics card. So, it's kind of hard to ignore the huge difference in performance. /shrug

Everything that was old is new again, and so that makes what I found boring about WoW way back then interesting now. Playing with just Robyn is how I ended my last play session in 2005, so it makes sense that I'm most comfortable with that in 2011. Josh has elected to created a character on our server to help out, but I make no guarantees of coordinating shared playtime because I know how I am.

Doing instances will happen, but I don't know if it will ever become the norm. It doesn't matter how easy they make getting into them. Doing multiple little chunks (5-10 mins) of questing here and there feels best, and the time commitment for instances only goes up over time. We shall see, though.

I actually just moved a bunch of music stuff (archived/working projects and sample libraries) to a new hard drive, so I have plenty of space for gaming (and so much buffer, too). I'm on a 4 year-old MacBook without 3D acceleration, and WoW runs fine, which seems like black magic to me.

All this disjointed rambling aside, Robyn and I are level 15 and looking forward to mounts really soon ;-)

The noob areas for the new classes are kind of like Disneyland rides.

They made queuing for instances super easy. I'm with you about liking to play solo, but now that I've done a bunch of random dungeons I'm kind of getting over it. And if you get grouped with a total @ss you can vote to kick. I don't remember if that was ever a feature originally.

Unless you're talking about endgame content, of which I have never experienced. When Katie and Bob decided to transfer to our server, I figured I would at least level one toon and try it out. Should be easier to get to 85 since they started having guild perks like extra mounted speed and xp buffs.

Ben asked me if I wanted a gaming machine. I kind of do. I mean, it would be something we could build together, plus it would free up a ton of space on my Macbook so I can actually use it for projects it was meant for. Does that sound like a commitment The Lifestyle? I mean, I don't really play for more than an hour unless he's playing with me. And at our level we pretty much just queue for instances because I hate Outland.

I just finished along with completing the DLC.

I was a bit let down by the end of the game, in the sense that if you have 100 speech there's not much in the way of action. I do like how they summarize the threads of the story depending on your action.

Like I said in the post, as an experience it's often essential. As far as just creating a game, it's not integral to a program with rules that accepts input from a player and outputs something (unless it's central to the game itself, like Rock Band).

I know the struggles of having to create the "chrome" of a project after the initial "functional" part is done. As a programmer, the chrome is often an afterthought when maybe sometimes it should be the forethought.

If you as the 10-11 y/o set in the classes I teach, you will essentially find that there are two groups: one that thinks the music is a huge factor in setting the mood for the level, and one that would lose the entire audio aspect if it meant one less step of programming. Of course, the latter group is typically composed of the few students who don't typically pick up the material as quickly or easily as the others and pretty much ignore all of the neat-but-optional bells and whistles presented for their use. I mean, it's a dimension. An element of complexity to add to the over-all experience.

Sorry to hear about this. I checked your site and the homepage itself won't load now. I can't really tell what's wrong since it's pointing to an error in a gem library, which usually means there's nothing wrong with the gem itself, but instead some code of yours calling it. However, it could be a whole host of other things, too :-O Google-fu will be needed, as always.

I just upgraded to 1.1.0 also. I have everything working except when I try to update an issue, I get a 500 error. Can't seem to fine the problem. Maybe, some can point me in the right direction.

It's much too early to know whether Ruby is something I'd want to use full-time as I've barely dabbled in making anything with it. Jimmy is quickly becoming a pro at it, and it's influencing me to use it more.

As far as ASP.NET, I don't have any particular problem with it, but needing an IIS server to use it is limiting for easy non-work development. My work doesn't require a lot of in-depth knowledge of how it works (yet), so I'm getting by all right. Using C# as the server-side language makes me feel like more of a well-rounded programmer (in that it supports non-web dev, too), but it's more challenging in its scope. Visual Studio 2008, which I currently use, still tends to do a lot of code bloat when using built-in widgets, which is something that irks my from-scratch tendencies, even though in a higher-pressure environment is often necessary. It's possible VS 2010/MVC is better about this, but I haven't used it.

I still use CakePHP for my main sites (nebyoolae.com and nebyooweb.com), so when I'm doing my own development I'm mainly digging around in PHP. Both it and Ruby on an Apache stack is easier to assemble on my Mac at home. Regardless of back-end, I spend the majority of my time on the front-end, so HTML/CSS/JS cares little for what platform I'm on.

I definitely feel stretched a bit thin maintaining three different back-end technologies, and there's no clear cut preference except for the free/open-source nicety of both PHP and Ruby. For now, I will continue to try to be knowledgeable in all until I have more experience with Ruby. Maybe then I'll have a clearer picture of what avenue I want to pursue further.

I'm curious your take on using two different platforms. On one hand you have .NET being the platform you work with on a daily basis for work, yet you drive towards Ruby as a side project. Is the Ruby work something you'd like to parlay into a full time gig, or just a hobby?

I ask because I faced the same situation when working on side projects at home between my mac and PC.

Everything's relative, right? My career's lights may seem high to you, but I constantly see others in my profession with much higher. I can never build enough websites or web apps, and they can never be good enough. At least I'm all right with staring at a screen for 8 hours and then going home to do it for countless hours more. That's something not everyone can (let alone <em>wants</em>) to do.

Your resume is insanely impressive, I was completely blown away by what you've accomplished in ten years. I'm positively green with envy, I could never amass such a portfolio. Take pride in what you've accomplished, and give yourself a pat on the pack for never settling (as so many of us do) for the status quo. Evolution, that's what keeps us one step ahead....

Congrats! I myself have yet to post regularly. Now about the house, my ex and I kept the yearly warranty payments up for that very reason. Came in handy, too, since our AC failed like clockwork every single year in the TX summers here. For us, it was about 350 a year.

I know previously what we could have done in ASP.NET would have manually read the file into an IO Stream and binary write out the file to the HTTP stream with the HTTP header mime-type, length and file name set to the file actually being streamed.

So your URL would be "blah.aspx?file=1" and it would stream like, "blah.mp3" out.

Not entirely sure how you'd do that with CakePHP/PHP. But I think the idea is the same.

When someone is beating you up, you reach a point--somewhere right around the point when you think you might actually die--where you'll pretty much say anything to get them to stop. Hence the unreliability of the information gained through torture. Not to even touch on the ethics.

I agree that both actions have value. It's just that the more I wait to actually start something (or even several smaller somethings) the more everyone else has done makes it seem less important. Too many other activities are bringing the entertainment right now, anyway. Regardless, it's cool to have a growing world to check out occasionally. Now they just need a freaking in-game map so I can even find everything!

I think there's an argument to be made about enjoying the act of making something vs. enjoyment of the completed work. My Minecraft skills are simple at best, so when I see someone make a giant pirate ship in our world, makes my simple geometric shapes seem a little less rad.

Also, I can hardly wait for April, when I can cut back to nighttime. It's going to be SUPER AND MAGICAL.

Also also, thank you for reminding me to make an ortho appt.

Thanks, Candice. Most of life seems like it's just a process of learning to not care about negativity and judgement from others, perceived or imagined. It's a battle that will be waged my entire life, but others interjecting like this about it always helps.

"I shouldn't care what others think."

For me, that's the prop that spins up and rolls the anxiety plane off the runway. "Should" statements... they can be really dangerous. They're an internal judgment, causing us to question, punish, and criticize ourselves. I've learned to stop every "should" statement and really, really think about it.

We're told all the time not to care what others think, but you're right in that judgment is one of those human things that happens all the time. People do think things about us, and sometimes negative things; in my mind, if you're a sensitive person, want to be socially/empathetically successful, and have had psyche-molding experiences with judgment, it seems natural that you're going to care what others think. Feedback can be useful and help us grow, and we have to be open to it. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. But yes, when the terror of someone else's slim perspective of our personhood really begins to disrupt everyday life, it is an issue. And a tricky one to sort out. I just think this is a cool process to read about, and it's clear that you're thinking through it in a thorough way. Just don't punish yourself too much. :)

Congratulations on submitting the bug. You didn't avoid it - you powered on through, potential judgment and all! That takes balls.

<p>Some of your finest and funniest writings were on LJ, and it's where I had the privilege of meeting you, and watching you go through your ups and downs, as I experienced and wrote about my own.</p>
